Centre of Canadian Studies

Our research

Introduction

The Centre of Canadian Studies was established in 1975. It is the longest running Centre outside Canada. Through those years the Centre has established itself as the leading centre for research on Canada and Quebec in the UK.

The Centre provides a research forum for academic staff and graduate students researching Canada at Edinburgh, with a particuar strength in the social sciences, in Politics and International Relations, Sociology, Social Anthropology and Social Policy. Currently much research focus is on the comparative analysis of Quebec and Scotland: voting behaviour, political parties, referenda, and liberal nationalism. The practice of multiculturalism in Canada is a second focus with particular attention to its contrast with interculturalism in Quebec, and the accommodation of migrant communities across Europe. In addition, there is an increasing focus on issues relating to indigenous First Nations, Inuit and Métis Canadians.
