This presentation examines new language policies being developed in Canada’s youngest territory of Nunavut to recognize indigenous and settler languages and to protect the indigenous Inuit language from erosion.

The presentation looks closely at the politics of language policy development in the territory between 2008 and 2013 and discusses the implementation of Nunavut’s new Official Languages Act and its Inuit Language Protection Act.

The presentation considers whether the new language policy approach being developed in Nunavut is a model that could be used in other jurisdictions serving indigenous and settler communities.
