The Dynamics of a Multicultural State

Canadian Studies 1A is an interdisciplinary course that examines the dynamics of a multicultural state in the country where the term “multiculturalism” was developed. The course enables you to explore a range of disciplines taught within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences from an area studies perspective.

Topics this year include:
Urban multiculturalism in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.
French, British and American interests in the development of Canada.
Nationalism, language and sovereignty referendums in Quebec.
Islands and Identity.
Indigenous land claims and Arctic governance.
Multiculturalism and film.

In 2010-11 the course was nominated in 7 EUSA Teaching Award Categories.

Here are some of the comments from students who took the course last year:

“Annis May Timpson's 10 am lectures were always lively, engagingly current, delivered with enthusiasm and relevant to the actual concerns and identified interests of the students in the class.”

“Dr. Timpson is a brilliant lecturer - passionate about her subject and inspires those who she teaches.”

“Dr Timpson has surpassed all expectations from a member of academic staff and goes out of her way to ensure students are happy and enjoying the course at all times. Dr Timpson is punctual, polite, very chatty, very approachable and makes a real effort to get to know you as an individual, rather than being 'just another student.”

“Dr Timpson is an extremely effective communicator and publishes all feedback she receives with a series of 'action points' which students can see the effect of on the front line in her teaching.”

"A great course, with lots of relevance to other courses and subjects."
