The Centre of Canadian Studies welcomes enquiries from students interested in pursuing PhD or MPhil degrees.
Please contact Dr Annis May Timpson, email@example.com to discuss your research ideas.
All students wishing to apply for the PhD or MPhil degrees must prepare a 3 page thesis proposal outlining their research topic. Please click “How to Apply” for more details.
PhD (3 years full-time, 6 years part-time)
This degree combines a programme of research training and courses with independent research leading to the production of a PhD thesis. Students are supervised by two academics. In Year 1 students complete course work and prepare a full thesis research proposal. In Year 2 students conduct primary research and begin writing the PhD thesis. This process is completed in Year 3, resulting in the production of an original thesis (100,000 words max.) that makes a significant contribution to knowledge. The thesis is examined by two specially appointed examiners.
MPhil (2 years full-time, 4 years part-time)
This degree combines a programme of research training and courses with research leading to the production of a thesis (60,000 words max.) that demonstrates an advanced level of knowledge in the field of study. In Year 1 students complete their course work and prepare their thesis research proposal. In Year 2 students focus on writing the MPhil thesis. The thesis is examined by two specially appointed examiners.
Subject to satisfactory progress, students on the MPhil programme can transfer into the PhD programme at the end of their first year.
