Doctoral Studentship

Applications are invited for a PhD Studentship, worth £4,000 per annum, commencing September 2012.  The Studentship is jointly funded by the Foundation for Canadian Studies in the United Kingdom and the Graduate School of Social and Political Science.

The award is for one year, in the first instance, and is renewable for a further two years, subject to satisfactory academic progress. The successful candidate will be based in the Centre of Canadian Studies and co-supervised in the Graduate School of Social and Political Science.

Research proposals are invited on any topic that frames the study of Canada within the social and political sciences. Proposals may focus wholly on Canada or place research on Canada in a broader international context.

Applications are invited from British citizens and Canadian citizens who are permanent residents in the UK and wish to enter the PhD programme in the Centre of Canadian Studies in September 2012.

Applicants wishing to be considered for September 2012 entry must submit the following items by May 4 2012 :

  1. A full research proposal, as specified below, submitted to: CentreofCanadianStudies@ed.ac.uk

PhD Studentship: Research Proposal

Your proposal should be 3 typed A4 pages in font size 12. 

It must address each of the following headings:

  1. Give an introductory statement explaining what your proposed research topic is and why it is important.
  2. Outline the key theory and research on the topic and how your proposed research relates to it.
  3. Discuss the themes, issues and questions the proposed research will explore.
  4. Comment on the specific method, or methods, you will use including any relevant information about fieldwork, interviews, or archival research you propose to undertake.
  5. Note any ethical issues that arise from your research (ethics can be interpreted in a broad sense as well as, for example, issues concerning matters of consent and confidentiality). See http://www.sps.ed.ac.uk/research/ethics for advice.
  6. Provide a 3-year timetable for completing your research, including research training, fieldwork, and the period of writing up your thesis. 
  7. Indicate how you would plan to share your research with relevant audiences in the UK and indicate how you expect your research to be useful, and to whom.
  8. Indicate the key reasons why you consider yourself to be an ideal candidate for this PhD Studentship.
