Sources of Funding

There are many sources of funding to help finance graduate research degrees at the Centre of Canadian Studies.

A. UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH SCHOLARSHIPS

1. University of Edinburgh Principal’s Career Development Scholarship

55 PhD scholarships are available to PhD applicants of outstanding academic merit and research potential. The scholarship pays fees at the UK/EU rate and an annual stipend of £14,000-£15,000.  It also provides training and development to help scholarship holders develop key career skills and development opportunities in teaching, public engagement, entrepreneurship, and research. Tenable for 3 years subject to satisfactory progress.

2. University of Edinburgh College of Humanities and Social Sciences Studentship/Scholarship

Designed to attract high quality PhD applicants, College Studentships pay fees at the UK/EU rate, a stipend of £12,000 per year and a research expenses allowance of £440 per annum. College Scholarships pay fees at the UK/EU rate and a research expenses allowance of £440 per annum.  Both types of award are tenable for 3 years subject to satisfactory progress.

3. University of Edinburgh School of Social and Political Science Graduate School Scholarships

Open to PhD applicants/ 1st year PhD students in Social and Political Science these scholarships pay fees at the UK/EU rate and a research expenses allowance of £440 per annum. Tenable for 3 years subject to satisfactory progress.

4. Edinburgh Global Research Scholarship

Designed to attract high quality overseas research students to Scottish universities, these awards cover the difference between the tuition fee for a UK/EU graduate student and that chargeable to an overseas graduate student. Available for 3 years subject to satisfactory progress.

5. Edinburgh Global Masters Scholarships

Scholarships (value £3,000 and £5,000) are offered to high quality students who are nationals of countries out with the EU and accepted for admission to a full-time Master’s degree program at Edinburgh are tenable for 1 year.

B. OTHER SCHOLARSHIPS

1. British Federation of Women Graduates Academic Awards

Around 5 or 6 awards of £1000 to £3000, given annually, on the basis of academic excellence, to women in their third and final year of doctoral studies.

2. Canadian Centennial Scholarship

The Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund (CCSF) provides awards ranging from £500 to £3,000 to Canadian men and women for academic and artistic study in the UK. These awards are exclusively for students who have already commenced their studies in the UK.

3. Carneigie Scholarships

A degree with First-Class Honours from a Scottish university is a necessary pre-requisite for this award. Scholarships include a £15,000 annual stipend, £400 towards fees, £575 to cover research costs, and £575 to cover travel between home and work.

4. Chevening Scholarships

The Chevening programme, has, over 26 years, provided more than 30,000 Scholarships at Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the UK for graduate students or researchers from countries across the world.

5. Commonwealth Scholarship Doctoral Award

Designed to nurture educational links among Commonwealth countries and to strengthen the ideals upon which the Commonwealth was founded, these awards are open to PhD applicants from Commonwealth countries. The awards include travel to/from home country, tuition/examination fees, financial support for fieldwork and thesis preparation, a personal maintenance allowance of £844 per month plus additional allowances for scholars travelling with spouses/children.

6. Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships  

Scholarships are for one academic year (usually nine months) at a study institution assigned by the Foundation Trustees. Funding is intended to defray costs associated with round-trip transportation, one month of intensive language training (if assigned by the Foundation), required fees for a normal course load, room and board, and some educational supplies. The award provides a flat grant of US$26,000 or its equivalent. Applicants who request and are assigned to an institution where costs exceed $26,000 must pay all additional costs.

7. Rothmere Foundation Fellowships

These Fellowships, the gift of the first Chancellor of Memorial University, have been established to aid and encourage students who have taken their first degree at Memorial University to pursue their studies for a British higher degree at a university of their Choice in the United Kingdom. It is not intended that students who have obtained most of their education in Britain be eligible for a Fellowship. Awards are made by the Rothermere Fellowships Trust, on the recommendation of the President of Memorial University of Newfoundland.

8. Savoy Foundation Studentship

Studentships will be awarded to meritorious applicants wishing to acquire training and pursue research in a biomedical discipline, the health sciences or social sciences related to epilepsy. To be eligible, the candidate must have a good university record (B. Sc., M.D. or equivalent diploma) and have ensured that a qualified researcher affiliated to a university and/or hospital, will supervise his/her work. Concomitant registration in a graduate program (M. Sc. or Ph. D.) is encouraged. These studentships last one (1) year, but will be renewable three times, upon request, for a maximum duration of four (4) years. The stipend will be $15,000 per year. The student with the highest mark will receive the prestigious Van Gelder-Savoy award of an additional $1,500. An annual sum of $1,000 will be allocated to the laboratory or institution as additional support for the research project.

9. Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada Doctoral Fellowship

Fellowships are offered to Canadian citizens applying for their first PhD program.  They are tenable at any recognized university abroad, providing the award holder has completed at least one previous degree at a Canadian university. Fellowships pay $20,000 per annum are tenable for 1- 4 years.

10. Trudeau Scholarships  

Scholarships include awards to support Canadian PhD candidates at a UK university wishing to pursue research of compelling present-day concern that  touches upon one or more of the four themes of the Foundation: Human Rights and Dignity, Responsible Citizenship, Canada in the World, People and their Natural Environment. Trudeau Scholars are highly gifted individuals who are actively engaged in their fields and expected to become leading national and international figures. Scholarships include an annual stipend of up to $40,000, an annual travel allowance of $20,000, and the opportunity to network with leaders in the humanities and social sciences.

C. BURSARIES AND RESEARCH SUPPORT

1. British Association for Canadian Studies Travel Award

Small travel awards (normally up to £500) to enable suitably qualified British scholars to make academic visits to Canada. Awards are not generally made solely for the purpose of attendance at a conference. Applicants should be UK citizens or long-term residents.

2. Foundation for Canadian Studies in the UK Postgraduate Canadian Studies Travel Award

Postgraduates who are British citizens and passport holders, undertaking research projects about Canada as part of their Masters, Doctorate, or other higher degree. These travel awards, each for £750, contribute towards the cost of a study visit to Canada.

3. International Council for Canadian Studies Graduate Student Scholarships

To enable successful candidates to spend 4-6 weeks at a Canadian university or research site other than their own doing research related to their thesis or dissertation in the field of Canadian Studies. The scholarship is to provide access to crucial scholarly information and resources in Canada in support of a thesis/dissertation that is close to or at the point of writing.

4. Postgraduate Solutions Masters and PhD Bursaries  

Postgraduate Solutions is offering 2 general postgraduate students the opportunity to get a bursary for £500 each to help them with the costs of their studies.

5. Prix du Québec

An award of £1,000 offered by the Québec Government Office in London to assist researchers based in the UK to carry out research related to Québec by facilitating a research visit to Québec. Projects that incorporate at least 50% of the focus on Québec, in a comparative approach, are also eligible.

6. University of Edinburgh: Centre for Canadian Studies Travel Award     

The Centre of Canadian Studies offers its PhD students small grants to assist with the costs of travel to Canada for research in Canadian Studies or to deliver conference papers on their research.

7. University of Edinburgh UK/EU Adult Returner Bursaries  

The University offers six bursaries (maximum value £3,000) to assist with child-care costs to UK and EU students returning to school after a break of at least three years. Awarded for one year in the first instance. Successful applicants pursuing graduate degree programmes of more than one year can apply for a further bursary in subsequent years.
